The shelters were always packed on Christmas, but it was also the one time of year that everyone not only managed to get a full meal, but also a gift of some sort. It depended on when you got there and where you went. Meric had been going to this one shelter for Christmas for years. He'd first gotten in as a kid, volunteering as a server. He'd been every year since helping clean and serve, even though the nuns that ran it had long since figured out that he wasn't a volunteer. As a kid his family had always volunteered somewhere on Christmas since his family was Jewish and didn't celebrate it. Now, he didn't really claim to believe any religion, he wasn't Christian, but he hadn't celebrated anything Jewish since he was 12.

Now he was wandering the streets, enjoying the quiet. It was a drastic difference from the usual hustle and bustle, even though the city wasn't totally still. It never was. In addition to the turkey dinner, he had a box of leftover bread and a few other things, a new pair of long arm-warmer style fingerless gloves and a new set of toiletries. This year had been a good Christmas.

As he walked past an apartment building he saw a girl with crazy hair and a box of kittens. "Ohh, kitty!" he said, pausing to look at them. They were so small and fluffy.

Winter was the worst time in the city and the time Meric frequented the shelters the most along with all the other homeless of the city. Right now though, in the middle of the day, it wasn't too bad. He was clad in goodwill chic as always, but he'd found a warmer coat than he'd had last year and that helped a lot. It was long and brown and most importantly, really, really warm and it had pockets. Meric liked pockets.

Sitting on a stoop outside a random building, he was working on his english homework, reading 1984. He'd been warned that Brit lit was depressing, but this was ridiculous! 1984 was way too close to the present for his tastes, even if 1984 was nearly 40 years in the past. As he read, he made notes in a warn out notebook. He couldn't make notes in the book or highlight it, the book belonged to his school and he was only borrowing it, but he would write down references and quotes in the notebook to use late in his paper.

Idly, he wiped his nose as it dripped from the cold. He could warm himself up pretty easily, but then he would screw himself and that was....not on. Unless he was in a dire emergency, no powers. That was the rule. He was John Q. American so long as the band was covered and he was good with that for the moment.
